Monitoring the conservation status of species and classifying threats and pressures on their populations is important to highlight conservation priorities, design meaningful conservation strategies and communicate the need for conservation interventions to politicians. This year is the 50th Anniversary of the IUCN Red List, the benchmark for conservation classification. The Red List includes conservation assessments for over 70,000 species, more than 20,000 of which are listed as threatened by at least one of a host of possible threats such as pollution, climate change, invasive species and human disturbance. Understanding how these threats are distributed is important if we are to plan and implement effective conservation strategies.
In this Conservation Hackathon, we challenge you to Hack the Redlist! We’re looking for novel ways to analyse and visualise the Red List data. Ensuring that we fully utilise available data on the threats and pressures facing biodiversity is crucial if we are to reduce the harm being done by human populations and halt the current extinction crisis.
